Lewis University’s Biomedical Sciences Program is designed specifically for students who already have a bachelor’s degree, but have not completed the science courses necessary for admission to medical or health professional schools. This program serves as a springboard not only for those preparing for the MCAT and medical school, but also those looking to enter any higher-level health profession education field, including dentistry, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, optometry, podiatry, physical therapy and more. Within this program, students can elect to complete either the Biomedical Science Bachelor of Arts or the Biomedical Science Post-Secondary Certificate.
Adult Learner Discount
This program is offered at our discounted tuition rate for adult learners ($600/credit hour), making the Biomedical Sciences Program even more affordable.
Admission Requirements
- An undergraduate Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
- A minimum 3.0 Cumulative GPA (on a 4.0 scale) for all college and/or university level coursework completed.
- One official transcript from each college and/or university attended.
- A “Statement of Intent” (please limit to one single-spaced page) in which you address the following:
- What particular health profession/career path are you interested in pursuing after earning your Biomedical Sciences certificate/degree, and why?
- What courses and/or skills do you hope to gain from this Biomedical Sciences Program?
- What clinical experience (if any) do you have? Please describe.
- Only for those interested in pursuing a career as a Physician Assistant: How many patient contact hours have you accumulated?
Application Deadline
- For a fall start date, application deadline is June 1st before the fall semester
- For a spring start date, application deadline is November 1st before the spring semester
BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES BACHELOR OF ARTS
This degree is intended for students who already hold a Bachelor’s degree but lack some of the prerequisite coursework required of professional schools and their respective entrance exams. Students will work with their academic advisor to determine courses that are most appropriate for the specific health profession/career interest. Course prerequisites, as stipulated in the catalog, apply and all laboratories associated with lecture courses will be required. Must complete 60 credit hours for the Biomedical Sciences major.
This program will help students prepare for the next step in their education by giving them the tools they need to become more competitive for entry into medical or health professional schools. In addition, the faculty and staff will provide guidance to assist students with applications and interview preparation.
BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE POST-SECONDARY CERTIFICATE
This certificate is intended for students who already hold a Bachelor’s degree but lack some of the prerequisite coursework required of professional schools and their respective entrance exams. The certificate program may be completed in lieu of the Bachelor of Arts with 32 credit hours of advisor-approved coursework from major-level offerings in the departments of Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. All laboratories associated with lecture courses will be required.
This program will help students prepare for the next step in their education by giving them the tools they need to become more competitive for entry into medical or health professional schools. In addition, the faculty and staff will provide guidance to assist students with applications and interview preparation.
